REACTION TO NYSUT ON I-REFUSE
Please contact ST CAUCUS with questions on our position.
October 5, 2015
Is this the NYSUT response you want or need?
Rather than call a press conference or send an email to all members, the NYSUT officers finally chose to respond to the IREFUSE Resolution’s call to action by burying their statement in paragraph 10 of a letter addressed only to local leaders last Friday (see below). NYSUT Leadership’s continued failure to include rank and file members disturbs the leadership of the STCaucus.
NYSUT’s Leadership was given a very powerful tool in the IREFUSE Resolution. To see it squandered in such an ineffective way reinforces the message to membership that NYSUT is not willing to effectively confront New York’s education crisis.
The STCaucus will continue to boldly represent the interests of teachers, children and public education by standing with members to push NYSUT Leadership to stand against APPR, Common Core State Standards and High-stakes Testing. Please ask your membership to visit http://www.nysape.org/ for the most recent and simplest forms for refusing your child from the state tests.
NYSUT Leadership must not allow this ineffective message, buried in a Friday afternoon email, to be NYSUT’s sole response to Resolution 16. The unanimous call from NYSUT’s delegates at April’s RA demands more and every NYSUT member deserves more!
